Laser Skin Resurfacing

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing is a treatment used to improve the color, texture, and appearance of your skin. Laser treatments are not invasive and do not require downtime. This is a great option for those who are looking to refresh their appearance, but who are not ready for surgery or more extensive procedures.

Laser resurfacing treatments heat the lower layers of skin, which stimulates the production of collagen and stimulates the growth of new tissues. Laser resurfacing can be either ablative or nonablative.

Ablative

Ablative treatments remove the top layers of skin, for the purpose of removing deep wrinkles or scars.

Nonablative

Nonablative treatments do not remove layers of skin and are effective at diminishing the appearance of spider veins, rosacea, and acne-related blemishes.

Dr. Sikking utilizes the Cynosure Icon® laser treatment, which is a nonablative laser resurfacing treatment, used to gently improve the appearance of your skin.

What is Cynosure Icon laser treatment?

Cynosure Icon laser treatment is a noninvasive resurfacing treatment that is done in the comfort of Dr. Sikking’s office. Icon uses fractional laser technology, which produces microbeams of energy that penetrate into the deep layers of the skin without injuring the skin’s surface layer.

Icon laser skin resurfacing treatments usually last 15-30 minutes. For most skin blemishes, ideal outcomes are seen after three to five sessions. While you may see some immediate improvement, it will take a week or more to see your final results.

What skin conditions can laser resurfacing improve?

Cynosure Icon laser skin resurfacing can improve the quality of your skin if you suffer from:

  • Rosacea
  • Spider veins
  • Sun damage
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven or rough skin
  • Pigmentation, including freckles and age spots

By stimulating new tissue growth, laser resurfacing treatments help to decrease the appearance of blemishes and heal skin damage that makes you look older and feel less confident.

What does a laser resurfacing treatment entail?

Before your treatment, Dr. Sikking discusses with you each step of the process and takes time to answer any questions. You are asked to avoid any sun exposure or tanning bed use several weeks before your treatment.

The day of your treatment, Dr. Sikking cleanses your skin and prepares your skin for the treatment. She applies a specialized gel and covers your eyes with protective eyewear.

Dr. Sikking uses the handheld device to apply the laser therapy directly to the treatment area. After your treatment, she applies a cooling gel to decrease any tenderness you may feel and encourage healing. There is no downtime, and you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
